Pneumatic Valve Spring Systems
Del West is proud to offer the only commercially available design and
manufacturing team for pneumatic spring systems.
A Del West system was first used by Brian Hart Engines in their F-1 engine in 1997 and since then, Del West has been constantly working to optimize the systems we design and manufacture.
We perform ongoing research to redefine the mechanical design, quality and design of seals, pressure regulation units, and every other aspect of the system.
Some of the advantages of pneumatic actuation:
- Response to aggressive cam profile
- Greater valve timing latitude
- Improved torque over entire operating range
- Variable spring forces by engine speed through air pressure regulation
- Significant decrease in reciprocating mass
- Reduced emissions through increased efficiencies, and faster, more precise valve actuation
All pneumatic unit projects must be approached in a systematic fashion.
Included in a pneumatic spring project will be cylinder head consultation for necessary modifications and recommendations for proper communication with engine management software.
There are generally significant costs to apply such a system to an engine design and this does not lend itself to single or low volume engine programs.
